On Monday mornings at 9.30 and on Tuesday afternoons at 1.30 a group of people meet outside the Highfield Park Centre to go for a walk. These walks are organised by Countryside Management Services and are intended to be an enjoyable way to give a boost to one’s heart and therefore cannot be considered as a gentle stroll. A leader sets a brisk pace, but a “backstop” is there to provide support for those who fall back a bit. Leaders and backstops are all trained volunteers.
The walks are all centred around Highfield Park itself but we frequently find ourselves crossing a muddy field, tramping through a wood or manoeuvring past fallen branches and therefore sensible footwear is advisable. I find a stick extremely useful too. The walks take about an hour and at the end quite a few of the walkers take advantage of the nearby Trestle Arts Centre to have a hot drink and a chat.
With the combination of friendly company, beautiful scenery and healthy exercise, it is not only my heart that has a boost.
There is a spacious carpark at the Centre.
